To Daffodils

Fair daffodils, we weep to see you haste away so soon; as yet the early-rising sun has not attain’d his noon. Stay, stay until the hasting day has run but to the evensong; and, having pray’d together, we Will go with you along. We have short time to stay, as you, we have as short a spring; as quick a growth to meet decay, as you, or anything. We die as your hours do, and dry away like to the summer’s rain; or as the pearls of morning’s dew, ne’er to be found again.

One doesn’t read nearly enough Herrick these days, nor Cavaliers in general. In fact, you’d think there’d be more Cavalier or Metaphysicals being bandied about, wouldn’t you? They’re so awfully good at being secular even when they’re being divine.

Right, the evensong reference seems almost facetious. And I didn’t realize that there was a whole 17th C “carpe diem” school. Btw, I owe my whole poetry repertoire to music, 1/2 to singing in choirs, 1/2 to constantly looking for things to set. This one, I owe to Ken Fleet. Hi Ken!
